Google Announces Non-Exclusive Advertising Services Agreement with Yahoo! in U.S. and Canada

Posted on 08:00 by Unknown

Companies will also Enable Interoperability Between Their Instant Messaging Services

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (June 12, 2008) – Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) today announced that it has reached an agreement that gives Yahoo! the ability to use Google’s search and contextual advertising technology through its AdSense™ for Search and AdSense for Content advertising programs. Under the agreement, Yahoo! has the option to display Google ads alongside its own natural search results in the U.S. and Canada. In addition, Yahoo! can serve contextually targeted ads on its U.S. and Canadian web properties as well as on its current publisher partner sites. Yahoo will continue to operate its own search engine, web properties and advertising services.

In addition, Yahoo! and Google agreed to enable interoperability between their respective instant messaging services bringing easier and broader communication to users.

"This commercial agreement provides Yahoo! with the opportunity to deliver more relevant ads to users and provide advertisers and publishers with better advertising technology to help them succeed in their own businesses," said Eric Schmidt, Chairman and CEO of Google. "This agreement will preserve the competitive and dynamic online advertising space."

As a result of the agreement, Yahoo! will be able to complement its own advertising program with Google’s advertising technology. As a result, advertisers will be able to better reach consumers, and Yahoo! and its current publisher partners can generate more revenue. Yahoo can use Google’s advertising technology on as many or as few of its search results and content pages as it chooses.

This non-exclusive agreement allows Yahoo! to enter into similar agreements with other advertising providers. In addition, Yahoo! will maintain relationships with its own advertising customers and will continue to rely exclusively on its own advertising program outside of the U.S. and Canada. The agreement has a term of up to ten years: a 4-year initial term and two 3-year renewals at Yahoo!’s option. Financial terms between the two companies were not disclosed.

Although Google and Yahoo are not required to receive regulatory approval of the arrangement before implementing it, the companies have voluntarily agreed to delay implementation for up to three and a half months to give the U.S. Department of Justice time to review the arrangement.

NASA and Google Announce Lease at Ames Research Center

Posted on 08:00 by Unknown

Mountain View, Calif. (June 4, 2008) – NASA and Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) today announced plans to develop a new high-technology campus at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, Calif.

Overview of the NASA area
Overview of the area.

Under the terms of the 40-year agreement, Google will lease 42.2 acres of unimproved land in NASA Research Park at Ames to construct up to 1.2 million square feet of offices and research and development (R&D) facilities in a campus-style setting. An overview of the area is available in Google Maps™ and the Google Earth™ program at maps.google.com/googleameslease.

"With this new campus, we will establish a new era of expanded collaboration with Google that will further enhance our Silicon Valley connections," said Ames Director S. Pete Worden. "This major expansion of NASA Research Park supports NASA’s mission to lead the nation in space exploration, scientific discovery and aeronautics research."

"This long-term lease agreement is a key component of Google’s strategy for continued growth in Silicon Valley," said David Radcliffe, Google’s vice president of real estate and workplace services. "We believe this collaboration between Google, NASA and the city of Mountain View is emblematic of the mutually beneficial partnerships that can be created between the public and private sectors."

Under the terms of the lease, Google will pay NASA an initial base rent of $3.66 million per year. This rate is based on appraisals establishing fair market value of the land. NASA will use the proceeds to cover the full cost of the lease and the balance for maintenance, capital revitalization, and improvements of the real property assets at Ames.

The 40-year lease provides for periodic escalations and adjustments of rent. Google may extend the lease for three 10-year terms. After that, NASA and Google may agree to extend the lease two additional 10-year terms. If all extensions are exercised, the lease term will be a total of 90 years. NASA will retain control over the project during its construction phase, including approving the design, issuing building permits, conducting inspections and monitoring construction.

Construction will proceed in three phases. The first phase is planned to begin by the end of September 2013, the second phase by 2018 and the third by 2022. While the majority of the development will consist of office and R&D space, Google also plans to construct company housing and amenities such as dining, sports, fitness, child care, conference and parking facilities for its employees, as well as recreation and parking facilities and infrastructure improvements for NASA’s use.

Today’s announcement is the latest in a series of collaborations dating back to September 2005, when NASA and Google announced plans to work together on a variety of technology-focused R&D activities. NASA and Google signed a memorandum of understanding that year, launching negotiations for this development in NASA Research Park. Located at Ames, NASA Research Park is a world-class, shared-use educational and research-and-development campus.

Since signing the memorandum of understanding in 2005, NASA and Google have begun collaboration on several joint projects. The Planetary Content project develops software that makes it easier for the science community to publish planetary data via the Internet. This project has already provided high-resolution lunar imagery and maps to the Google Moon™ program and resulted in the "NASA" layer in Google Earth.

Similarly, the Global Connection project enhances the "National Geographic" layer in Google Earth by embedding geo-referenced stories and images from around the world. The Disaster Response project develops prototype software tools to help improve first response to large-scale natural disasters.

Google Site Search Taps Power of the Cloud to Improve Search for Business Websites

Posted on 08:00 by Unknown

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., (June 3, 2008) – Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) today announced Google Site Search™, a service that provides quality search to any website with the flexibility of cloud computing. The new service, hosted by Google, allows site owners to quickly implement search functionality that is familiar and useful to their visitors. At the same time, site owners can customize Google Site Search to account for the unique nature of their site and their content.

Google Site Search now offers:

  • Enhanced index coverage: comprehensive search results on any website by crawling and indexing more content, even pages deep within a site;
  • Synonyms: website owners can add their own custom synonym dictionary (a search for [cd] would include [certificate of deposit] in search results);
  • Date biasing: site owners can influence search results based on the age of documents (e.g., a recent product datasheet is weighted more heavily than older product documents);
  • Top results biasing: specific sections of the site (such as the product catalog) appear at the top of search results
  • Full customization of the look & feel: site owners can fully customize the search results interface to integrate with the unique look and feel of their sites.

"Cloud computing makes powerful search readily accessible to any business on the web," said Dave Girouard, president of Enterprise, Google. "Website owners typically invest in good content, search optimization and advertising to attract customers – but often lack a quality search experience once customers arrive. With Google Site Search, websites can immediately increase customer satisfaction as they are improving their business results."

Google Site Search is hosted by Google, and takes advantage of the power of Google infrastructure and flexibility of cloud computing to give any website the same relevance, ease of use and familiar Google.com search experience in addition to more granular control.

Research indicates that customers increasingly rely on search to find information on individual websites:

  • 90 percent of consumers who have made an online purchase said they used site search to access self-service content (Harris Interactive)
  • When navigation attempts fail, 50 percent of users will turn to search (Jupiter Media Matrix)
  • In a study of 2,000 shoppers, 71 percent used keyword searches to find their products (eTailing Group)

"Adding Google Site Search to our website not only helps customers, it also helps our support staff and our business," said Layla Rudy, website content manager for EMC Insignia. "Since customers are able to find product information much more easily on EMCInsignia.com, we have seen an 85 percent decrease in customer-requested refunds along with an approximate 20 percent increase in e-commerce sales."

Any business can sign up online, and in less than 10 minutes offer Google Site Search to visitors. In addition to enhanced index coverage, Google Site Search includes all of the benefits site search users have come to rely on:

  • Site search hosted by Google, eliminating the need to install and maintain additional technology
  • Power and reliability of Google’s infrastructure
  • Relevant results and sub-second query response times characteristic of Google.com
  • Ability to easily set up, purchase, and manage results online
  • Full customization of search results available through an XML API
  • Reporting features that give insight into visitor behaviors
  • Integration with Google Analytics for in-depth reporting
  • Options for email and phone support
  • Opt-in capability to include ads (available through AdSense for search)

"Google Site Search has not only helped our customers find and purchase products online more successfully, it has also helped us continually improve our website," said Kay Pham, senior product manager for eHealth Insurance. "By showing us what people are searching for, we can identify upcoming trends and incorporate them into our product development cycle. It’s like an automatic focus group."

Google Site Search costs $100 a year for searching up to 5,000 pages. For pricing on larger volumes of pages, visit www.google.com/sitesearch. Google Site Search builds on the Google Custom Search Engine™ (a hosted search solution introduced in October 2006) by adding business integration features through an XML API, the option to turn off ads, a more customized look and feel, as well as email and phone support. Those already using Google Custom Search Business Edition will experience the benefits of Google Site Search automatically with no need to upgrade

Google Site Search is a member of a portfolio of search offerings from the Google enterprise group that also includes the Google Search Appliance™ and Google Mini™, both of which offer additional control over crawl depth and timing, as well as secure access to internal documents.

For more information about Google Site Search and the full suite of enterprise search products, please visit www.google.com/sitesearch.
