Google Sets Its Sites on Google Apps

Posted on 07:00 by Unknown

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (February 28, 2008) – Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) today introduced Google Sites™, an application that makes creating a team web site as easy as editing a document. With Google Sites, people can quickly gather a variety of information in one place – including videos, calendars, presentations, attachments, and text – and easily share it for viewing or editing with a small group, their entire organization, or the world.

"Creating a team web site has always been too complicated, requiring dedicated hardware and software as well as programming skills," said Dave Girouard, vice president and general manager of enterprise, Google. "Now with Google Sites, anyone can create an entirely customized site in minutes and invite others to contribute. We are literally adding an edit button to the web."

Creating and editing a set of pages in a Google Site requires no knowledge of HTML or web design skills. People can start a new page with one click. Adding content is as easy as clicking the edit button. Sharing is as simple as sending an invitation. All content is instantly searchable, and Google Sites is accessible through any web browser.

Anyone inside an organization can begin using Google Sites by signing up for Google Apps™ communication and collaboration services through Team Edition – without having to burden IT for support. After verifying their business or school email address, people can instantly invite others to join, or easily identify people within their organization already using Google Apps.

With Google Sites, people can create a wide variety of sites, such as:

  • an intranet to centralize company information;
  • a team site to manage a project;
  • a profile site including an individual’s resume, areas of expertise, and goals for the quarter; and
  • a virtual classroom to post homework assignments, class notes and other resources.

Google Sites is secure and scalable. Users have full control over who can own, collaborate and view pages, and view version history for each site. Google Sites is built to scale to any sized organization – from a five person start-up to a 50,000 person enterprise or university – and requires no hardware or software to buy, install, or maintain.

Additional features include the ability to:

  • Embed content from other Google products, including YouTube™, Google Docs™, Google Calendar™, and Picasa™
  • Upload files of any type
  • Customize a site’s look and feel

Google Sites is based on JotSpot™ technology and available in the Team, Standard, Premier, and Education Editions of Google Apps. If your business or school doesn’t use Google Apps, please visit http://sites.google.com and sign up for Team Edition with your work or school email address. Existing Google Apps administrators can enable Google Sites immediately from the Google Apps control panel.

Global Consortium to Construct New Cable System Linking US and Japan to Meet Increasing Bandwidth Demands

Posted on 07:00 by Unknown

Construction underway to build 10,000 km linear cable system with a capacity of up to 7.68 Tbps to enhance Trans-Pacific connectivity

TOKYO, Japan (February 26, 2008) – A consortium of six international companies announced they have executed agreements to build a high-bandwidth subsea fiber optic cable linking the United States and Japan. The construction of the new Trans-Pacific infrastructure will cost an estimated US$300 million.

The new cable system – named Unity – will address broadband demand by providing much needed capacity to sustain the unprecedented growth in data and Internet traffic between Asia and the United States. Unity is expected to initially increase Trans-Pacific lit cable capacity by about 20 percent, with the potential to add up to 7.68 Terabits per second (Tbps) of bandwidth across the Pacific.

According to the TeleGeography Global Bandwidth Report, 2007, Trans-Pacific bandwidth demand has grown at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 63.7 percent between 2002 and 2007. It is expected to continue to grow strongly from 2008 to 2013, with total demand for capacity doubling roughly every two years.

"The Unity cable system allows the members of the consortium to provide the increased capacity needed as more applications and services migrate online, giving users faster and more reliable connectivity,” said Unity spokesperson Jayne Stowell.

The Unity consortium is a joint effort by Bharti Airtel, Global Transit, Google, KDDI Corporation, Pacnet and SingTel. The name Unity was chosen to signify a new type of consortium, born out of potentially competing systems, to emerge as a system within a system, offering ownership and management of individual fiber pairs.

This new 10,000 kilometer (km) Trans-Pacific cable will provide connectivity between Chikura, located off the coast near Tokyo, to Los Angeles and other West Coast network points of presence. At Chikura, Unity will be seamlessly connected to other cable systems, further enhancing connectivity into Asia.

The Unity consortium selected NEC Corporation and Tyco Telecommunications to construct and install the system during a signing ceremony held in Tokyo on February 23, 2008. Construction will begin immediately, with initial capacity targeted to be available in the first quarter of 2010.

The new five fiber pair cable system can be expanded up to eight fiber pairs, with each fiber pair capable of carrying up to 960 Gigabits per second (Gbps). By having a high fiber count, Unity is able to offer more capacity at lower unit costs.

About Unity

Unity is an international consortium that is developing a 10,000 km undersea cable system connecting Japan and the United States. Google Summer of Code 2008: For the Love of Code

Posted on 07:00 by Unknown

Announcement
February 25, 2008

We’re kicking off Google Summer of Code 2008, our pioneering program that funds college students to write open source software during their summer vacations.

Over the coming months we’ll be working with open source and free software groups to select hundreds of student projects from thousands of applications. Then, during the summer, we’ll distribute millions of dollars in stipends to the students cranking out the code. Our goal is to increase the world’s supply of open source software while providing young programmers inspiring, meaningful summer jobs.

Since the first Google Summer of Code in 2005, the program has had remarkable success. Last year we connected 900 students with more than 130 open source mentoring groups, including such prominent organizations as Dojo, Python, Samba and Ubuntu. Several past students are still contributing to their projects and many are serving as mentors in this year’s program. Meanwhile, similar programs are springing up all over, including the Finnish Summer Code Program, the GNOME Women’s Summer Outreach Program, the Season of Usability, and game publisher NCSoft’s Winter of Code.

This year’s Google Summer of Code promises to be the most successful we’ve ever held. We’ve extended the program timeline to allow students and mentors to discuss applications before settling in to write them, and we’re continuing last year’s tradition of announcing accepted applicants early to allow students more time to bond with their project communities.

We look forward to applications from organizations and students eager to participate. Applications for organizations open March 3 and close March 12; for students, applications open March 24 and close March 31. Coding will run from May 26 through August 18.

For more information, see the Google Summer of Code FAQ at: www.google-melange.com/document/show/gsoc_program/google/gsoc2011/faqs.

Soros Economic Development Fund, Omidyar Network and Google.org Launch Small to Medium Enterprise Investment Company for India

Posted on 07:00 by Unknown

Investment to Target “Missing Middle” Between Microfinance and Commercial Capital Markets

NEW YORK, (February 19, 2008) – The Soros Economic Development Fund (SEDF), Omidyar Network, and Google.org announced today a new $17 million Small to Medium Enterprise Investment Company for India to create job opportunities and spur greater economic participation for a larger segment of the population. This joint Investment Company will provide capital to small and medium businesses in underserved markets.

“With this investment, we will meet the huge demand to serve smaller businesses in India that have little access to finance,” said Neal DeLaurentis, Vice President of Soros Economic Development Fund. “Long ignored by commercial capital markets, small and medium businesses are an attractive investment opportunity as well as an engine for economic growth for India.”

Many small to medium Indian businesses lack formal funding options because of a market gap between the microloans offered by microfinance institutions and the larger investments of commercial banks and private equity funders. Most of the existing Small to Medium Enterprise funds make investments in the $3-$5 million range, leaving out a significant portion of this market. The Investment Company will target this “missing middle” with equity investments between $500,000 and $3.5 million.

“We have seen what microloans can do at the individual level and are excited about bringing that same opportunity to small and medium businesses,” said Jim Bunch, Director of Investments at Omidyar Network. “A new generation of entrepreneurs and their families will benefit economically and socially, and as their enterprises grow, these benefits can be shared with employees and their families, as well as the community at large.”

“While SMEs in rich countries represent half of GDP, they account for a much lower portion in developing economies like India, partly because SMEs don’t have access to the same type of financing,” said Sonal Shah of Google.org. “Our goal is to increase the flow of capital to SMEs in India. This is an important step in helping to attract commercial capital and reduce dependency on philanthropy or soft capital to fund this industry.”

SEDF, Omidyar Network and Google.org plan to locate the Investment Advisor at the Indian School of Business (ISB) in Hyderabad to leverage the school’s SME expertise. Dr. Reuben Abraham, currently the ISB’s Director of the Base of Pyramid Lab and a board member of SEDF, will be named Senior Advisor.

The Investment Company will hire an experienced Investment Advisor and two experienced senior investment analysts based in India to recommend and build the pipeline of portfolio investments.

Google Asks U.S. School Kids to "Doodle 4 Google"

Posted on 07:00 by Unknown

Announcement
February 13, 2008

Today, Google announced the launch of "Doodle 4 Google," a competition that invites school children to design a Google logo inspired by the question, "What If…?" The winning student’s doodle will be displayed on the Google homepage on May 22, 2008; the champion "doodler" will also win a $10,000 college scholarship and a $25,000 technology grant for his/her school.

The "Doodle 4 Google" competition is open to K-12 students in the U.S. Participating classrooms can use accompanying lesson plans to help guide students, while also integrating the project into classroom learning. Suggested questions will help students start dreaming and doodling: "What if…I could see into the future? What if….I could build any kind of invention I wanted?"

"Finding engaging projects that are aligned with core curricula and state standards is hard," said Kevin Jarrett, an elementary teacher from New Jersey. "The Doodle 4 Google contest is a winner because it builds on the intersections of art, science, social studies and language arts, captures the imagination of students, and provides them with an opportunity to share their creativity with the world."

Students’ doodles will be judged on artistic merit, creativity, representation of the theme, and other criteria. A panel of independent judges and Google employees will select the top doodles across age groups, from which the public will help select the final four. The grand prize winner will then be selected by Google and announced at an event hosted at Google’s headquarters on May 21, 2008. The doodle will be displayed on the Google homepage the following day.

The customization of the Google logo started in 1999, and these "doodles" are now designed almost exclusively by Google Webmaster Dennis Hwang, whose work is seen by millions every time he exhibits on the Google homepage. Dennis has creatively depicted worldwide events, anniversaries and holidays with doodles that incorporate the Google logo for the world of users to celebrate.

Teachers can register their class online by going to www.google.com/doodle4google. Registration closes on March 28 and all entries must be postmarked by April 12, 2008.

Further information, competition details, videos and past doodles are also available at www.google.com/doodle4google.

Image files of past Google doodles are available at www.google.com/doodle4google/press.html and broadcast quality video is available at www.thenewsmarket.com/google.

Nokia and Google to Offer Google Search to Nokia Customers Worldwide

Posted on 07:00 by Unknown

Industry leaders collaborate to provide mobile users fast and easy access to relevant information

BARCELONA, Spain (February 12, 2008) – Nokia and Google today announced that Google’s popular search engine will be integrated with the Nokia Search application. The integration will begin in select markets with the Nokia N96, Nokia N78, Nokia 6210 Navigator and Nokia 6220 classic. Google search will be extended to additional Nokia handset models in the future. Ultimately, Nokia will make Google search available to its customers in over 100 countries around the world, serving mobile owners speaking more than 40 languages.

Nokia Search, now with Google, offers fast and easy access to web information from the handset. In addition, Nokia Search also makes it possible for users to search content on their device and use local search engines for a complete search experience. Nokia Search is available on many devices and provides direct access with one click from the active standby screen, saving users time and steps in their searching. Once users have found the information they are seeking, Nokia Search enables users to act on that information by engaging device assets such as maps, messaging or the browser with just one click.

"Providing choices for our consumers is an important driver in Nokia’s Internet service strategy," said Ilkka Raiskinen, vice-president, software and services at Nokia. "This integration allows our consumers the ability to use the innovative search technologies, which have made Google almost synonymous with Internet search.

"Adding Google to Nokia Search provides mobile users with fast, relevant and comprehensive search experience that will be familiar to the people who use Google to search the web from their desktop," said Google’s VP of Engineering and Products for Mobile Vic Gundotra. "Google search combined with the high quality applications on Nokia devices help make information available to Nokia device users wherever they are and provide an excellent overall experience."

The collaboration announced today builds on previous cooperation between Nokia and Google. Google search has previously been available on Nokia Internet tablets, and last year the Nokia N95 8GB became the first mobile device to fully support YouTube, the video-sharing platform owned by Google.

Nokia Search is available on more than 40 Nokia devices in over 40 languages and in more than 100 countries. For the latest list of compatible Nokia devices, please visit www.mobilesearch.nokia.com.

Team Up With Google Apps

Posted on 07:00 by Unknown

New Google Apps Team Edition brings instant collaboration to groups at work or school

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (February 7, 2008) – Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) today announced Google Apps Team Edition as the simplest and fastest way for groups of employees and students to collaborate within an organization using Google Apps™. Once users verify their business or school email address, they can instantly share documents and calendars securely without burdening IT for support. Team Edition can easily be switched to Google Apps Standard, Premier or Education Edition for communications and collaboration across the entire company.

“More than half a million businesses have already chosen Google Apps to collaborate and share information across the organization,” said Dave Girouard, vice president and general manager of enterprise, Google. “With Team Edition, groups of individuals at school or work can just as easily get the benefits of Google Apps by simply signing up online.”

Once a user has signed up for Team Edition using a verified business or school email address, they can instantly invite others to join, or easily identify people within their organization already using Google Apps, to collaborate and share documents. Together, teams of people within a business or school can:

  • Work on the same document, spreadsheet or presentation (instead of emailing changes in multiple copies of the same attachment)
  • Publish documents and calendars for the team to view and update
  • Access information from any computer, even mobile phones

With Google Apps, there is no hardware or software to buy, install or maintain, so businesses can quickly begin to collaborate with minimal up front investment. Google Apps Team Edition currently includes:

  • Google Docs™ to create and share documents, spreadsheets and presentations
  • Google Calendar™ to arrange meetings, set schedules, and publish event information
  • Google Talk™ for instant messaging and free PC-to-PC voice calls
  • Start Page where users can access their Google Apps services and customized content

“Our business has been tripling every year, and we needed better tools to help us keep up with the growth. So we started using Google Docs and Google Calendar with our personal accounts to do things like coordinate customer visits and work together on documents, even when we’re traveling separately,” said Paul Laurie, co-founder of Walking Tree Travel (walkingtree.org), an organization that leads educational trips abroad for high school students. “We’re thrilled Google Apps Team Edition now allows everyone at Walking Tree to be connected automatically.”

Google Apps Team Edition lets colleagues and departments at work, or study groups at school, immediately begin sharing information within a domain. In addition, the Team Edition can easily be upgraded to Google Apps Standard, Premier or Education Edition for full administrative control, such as the ability to set default sharing options, decide which applications are available on the network, or determine who has access. When organizations switch to Google Apps Premier Edition, they also receive business integration capabilities and 24/7 support, including phone support for critical issues.

To sign up for Google Apps Team Edition or learn more, please visit www.google.com/apps.

Google’s statement on Microsoft’s bid for Yahoo

Posted by David Drummond, Senior Vice President, Corporate Development and Chief Legal Officer

The openness of the Internet is what made Google – and Yahoo! – possible. A good idea that users find useful spreads quickly. Businesses can be created around the idea. Users benefit from constant innovation. It’s what makes the Internet such an exciting place.

So Microsoft’s hostile bid for Yahoo! raises troubling questions. This is about more than simply a financial transaction, one company taking over another. It’s about preserving the underlying principles of the Internet: openness and innovation.

Could Microsoft now attempt to exert the same sort of inappropriate and illegal influence over the Internet that it did with the PC? While the Internet rewards competitive innovation, Microsoft has frequently sought to establish proprietary monopolies – and then leverage its dominance into new, adjacent markets.

Could the acquisition of Yahoo! allow Microsoft – despite its legacy of serious legal and regulatory offenses – to extend unfair practices from browsers and operating systems to the Internet? In addition, Microsoft plus Yahoo! equals an overwhelming share of instant messaging and web email accounts. And between them, the two companies operate the two most heavily trafficked portals on the Internet. Could a combination of the two take advantage of a PC software monopoly to unfairly limit the ability of consumers to freely access competitors’ email, IM, and web-based services? Policymakers around the world need to ask these questions – and consumers deserve satisfying answers.

This hostile bid was announced on Friday so there is plenty of time for these questions to be thoroughly addressed. We take Internet openness, choice and innovation seriously. They are the core of our culture. We believe that the interests of Internet users come first – and should come first – as the merits of this proposed acquisition are examined and alternatives explored.
