Google introduces Google Finance tab on iGoogle and Gadgets API for market data

Posted on 08:00 by Unknown

Announcement
October 24, 2007

Since launching Google Finance, we’ve been listening to user feedback and have added a number of features that offer users more comprehensive financial and stock information in one central location. We’ve rolled out a couple updates to more quickly connect users with the financial information they are looking for:

  • Google Finance tab on iGoogle – A dashboard of financial gadgets created by the Google Finance team, available on iGoogle. Google Finance gadgets are interactive and update dynamically, allowing users to quickly and easily find the information they are looking for in one location. The tab also allows users to add, customize and share their Google Finance experience with anyone they choose – investor buddies, finance enthusiasts, or the whole world.
  • Gadget API for market data – This API provides a framework to enable Google Gadget developers to display stock market information within a Google Gadget.

We know that Google users have diverse and unique interests, particularly when it comes to the world of finance. The pre-populated iGoogle Finance tab offers users useful financial gadgets and the ability to customize their page to match their exact preferences. And for those who have very specific financial interests, developers can now use Google Finance stock information to create gadgets with exactly the information they want such as their own correlation analysis, sector summary, etc.

For additional information on these features, please see our blog post at googlefinanceblog.blogspot.com/2007/10/api-gadgets-and-tabs-oh-my.html. And as always, Google Finance is a free service, accessible from finance.google.com, the Google Stock Quote feature in web search results, and the ticker symbols on users’ iGoogle pages and Google Desktop sidebars.

The Nielsen Company and Google Establish Strategic Relationship

Posted on 08:00 by Unknown

Nielsen to Provide Demographic Data for Google TV Ads

NEW YORK, NY and MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (October 24, 2007) – The Nielsen Company and Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) announced today that the companies have established a multi-year, strategic relationship. As a first step, the relationship leverages Nielsen’s experience in television audience measurement to bring demographic data to the Google TV Ads™ advertising platform. By combining Nielsen demographic data with aggregated set-top box data, Google can provide advertisers and agencies with comprehensive information to help them create better ads for viewers and maximize the return on their advertising spending.

Google TV Ads is an online platform for buying, selling, measuring and delivering television ads. The platform, which has been operational since May, includes advertising inventory across hundreds of channels and all dayparts. A key benefit of Google TV Ads is the ability to report second-by-second set-top box data so advertisers can evaluate the reach of an ad and only pay for actual set-top box impressions. Advertisers can better understand exactly how their ad is performing and make near real time changes to their TV advertising campaigns to deliver better ads to viewers. Data derived from Nielsen’s representative television ratings panels will provide Google TV Ads advertisers with the demographic composition of the audience.

This is the first time that advertisers and agencies will have this level of detailed measurement available in a single place and at such a large scale. This information is available through the existing Google AdWords™ report center

Moving forward, Google and Nielsen will explore a number of other opportunities to work together to measure online and other media. Additional details of the agreement were not disclosed.

“This is an important, strategic relationship for both companies and a great fit,” said David Calhoun, Chairman and CEO of The Nielsen Company. “We are pleased that Google looked to Nielsen to provide the demographic data that is so critical to the clients of its TV advertising platform. The relationship with Google – which we expect will expand significantly in the months ahead – is a prime example of the ways Nielsen is embracing new technologies, platforms and relationships worldwide to serve clients more completely, to provide companies with its insights and to help expand the base of potential advertisers everywhere.”

“As we continue to expand our TV advertising program, it is important that we provide advertisers and agencies with data that will help them reach their target demographic with the right ad,” said Eric Schmidt, chief executive officer at Google. “Working closely with Nielsen, the industry leader, improves our measurement capabilities by adding a demographic layer on top of existing set-top box data. We’re pleased that Nielsen is working with us in this endeavor.”

Google Analytics Unveils New Features, Urchin Software

Posted on 08:00 by Unknown

Announcement
October 16, 2007

Today at the eMetrics Summit in Washington, D.C., Google announced new features to its Google Analytics™ web service such as site search reporting and event tracking, and an updated version of Urchin™ software. This enhanced feature set makes essential Web 2.0 information more accessible and comprehensible, and enables Google Analytics users to better understand their users and to act on reporting information in more sophisticated ways.

Users can enable site search to identify keywords, categories, products, and trends across time and user segments, thereby helping them measure the effectiveness of their websites and their marketing dollars. Site search aggregates data about how searches affect site usage, e-commerce activity, and conversion rates, by tracking internal search patterns. This best-of-breed feature will soon be available worldwide, and it works with Google Custom Search™, GSA, Google Mini™ and many other non-Google site search products.

With Web 2.0 features also spreading on the Internet, measuring their success is increasingly valuable. Event tracking, which launches in a limited beta at the eMetrics Summit, enables Google Analytics users to measure visitor engagement with a site’s interactive elements, such as Ajax, Javascript, Flash movies, page gadgets, downloads, and other multimedia Web 2.0 experiences. Google Analytics users who are attending the eMetrics Summit can sign up for event tracking at the Google Analytics booth, and users should note that when they add event tracking, they must update their page tags from "urchin.js" to "ga.js".

For those who prefer a software version of web analytics, Google Analytics is introducing Urchin Software in limited beta worldwide. Urchin Software is an update to Urchin 5 software, and a free 90-day trial of the beta version of Urchin Software can be requested from an authorized reseller: www.google.com/analytics/support_partner_provided.html.

Urchin Software will be available for a discounted price to users of Urchin 5, and will include many improvements including tools to assist in migrating configurations and data from previous versions of Urchin. Once the new software is out of beta, it can be purchased through an authorized reseller, who often offers comprehensive support and consultation services as well.

Users all over the world rely on Google Analytics to optimize their businesses and understand their customers’ needs. To better serve them, Google Analytics has added six new languages, bringing the total number of supported languages to 25. The new languages are Czech, Hungarian, Portuguese (Portugal), Thai, Filipino, and Indonesian.

Watch YouTube Videos in Google Earth

Posted on 08:00 by Unknown

Announcement
October 11, 2007

Virtual explorers can now discover and watch YouTube (www.youtube.com) videos while they traverse the globe. Starting today, a YouTube layer will be available in the Featured Content folder of Google Earth (earth.google.com).

The new layer enables users to zoom in on any location on the planet and view YouTube videos related to that place. For example, a trip to Maui offers videos of surfing, snorkeling and exotic sea life, while users who fly to Chamonix-Mont Blanc, France, can watch breathtaking videos filmed at the highest points of the Alps.

The integration of YouTube functionality into Google Earth offers a new way to experience destinations as seen through the eyes of YouTube users who have visited them, enabling people to watch, hear and feel what’s happening in locations theythank may never have otherwise visited. For instance, armchair tourists to Rome can now watch YouTube videos filmed at the Colosseum, providing a holistic experience and adding a new perspective for users who enjoy looking at the Colosseum and other noteworthy locations from above through satellite imagery, as 3D buildings created with SketchUp, and in user-contributed photos uploaded to Panoramio.

Here’s How It Works:

Users should download the newest Google Earth client, if they have not yet done so. Once in Google Earth they should open the "Featured Content" folder on the left hand side of the screen and click "YouTube." Once clicked, icons of the YouTube logo will be visible on the globe. Users can either fly from place to place, exploring videos as they go, or they can search for a particular location and view the videos available there. Users simply mouse over the icon to read the title of the video, and clicking on the icon will open a pop-up bubble. Windows users can watch the video directly in the pop-up bubble; Mac and Linux users should click the link in the bubble to watch the video in their browser. To learn more about the YouTube user who uploaded the video or to view more of their content, users should click on the username.

Google Search Appliance Takes Five

Posted on 08:00 by Unknown

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (October 10, 2007) – Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) today announced the fifth generation of the iconic yellow Google Search Appliance™ hardware, version 5.0, which provides universal search capabilities for secure access to enterprise content systems—including EMC Documentum, IBM FileNet, OpenText Livelink, and Microsoft SharePoint. The company also announced significant improvements in reach, security and relevance, in addition to business search technology developments available at the new Google Enterprise Labs™ site.

"When we launched the first Google Search Appliance five years ago, we had a vision to make search inside of business as simple and effective as searching on Google.com," said Dave Girouard, vice president and general manager of Google Enterprise. "By combining Google’s deep knowledge in search with more understanding and control for environments behind the firewall, we are helping businesses keep pace with the velocity of information."

The new Google Search Appliance helps organizations gain from Google’s research and engineering in "universal search" (a term that describes how search technology can work across information silos to give the best answer every time a user enters a query). This notion is vital for businesses, where content often resides in separate repositories.

To help break silos and reach into more enterprise content, the Google Search Appliance 5.0 now includes an enterprise connector framework for access to enterprise content management (ECM) systems. This framework extends the already sizable reach into 220 file formats, file shares, intranets, databases, applications, and hosted services. The connectors, which are available under open source licenses, include:

  • EMC Documentum
  • IBM FileNet
  • OpenText Livelink
  • Microsoft SharePoint

Security has been enhanced to include:

  • Support for Microsoft Windows Integrated Authentication (WIA)
  • Secure crawling and serving of file system content
  • Significant performance increases in the SAML-based Authentication and Authorization API

In addition, Google also announced Google Enterprise Labs, a site dedicated to improving the search experience inside businesses by providing early access to such search innovations as:

  • Search-as-you-Type adds dynamic, real-time search by presenting suggestions and auto-complete queries while the user is typing. Search-as-you-Type is ideal for directory lookup, glossary terms, and search suggestions.
  • Do-it-Yourself KeyMatch adds social search concepts to improve search results inside of business by allowing users to promote specific web pages for specific search terms, such as the CEO blog as the top result for CEO. Administrators have the option to monitor what’s been added and deleted.
  • Parametric Search and Filtering allows for drill-down on search results leveraging semi-structured information and metadata.

The Google Search Appliance was launched in 2002. The number of customers have grown on average 100 percent year-over-year, and today more than 10,000 companies now rely on Google enterprise search appliances (Google Search Appliance and Google Mini) to help employees find business information. The new Google Search Appliance supports English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Dutch, Swedish, Russian, Finnish, Danish, Norwegian, Chinese simplified, Chinese traditional, Japanese, Korean and Brazilian Portuguese. Google opens new content distribution channel on AdSense

Posted on 08:00 by Unknown

Announcement
October 9, 2007

As media becomes more and more fragmented, content providers and advertisers are looking for new ways to distribute their messages to the right audiences at scale. To better connect content providers with consumers and to give publishers new ways to further engage their audiences, Google today announced the availability of video units, the first offering for content distribution on AdSense™. Video units enable AdSense publishers to display relevant, targeted video content within a customized, embedded player that’s ad-supported. Google is working with select YouTube content partners including TV Guide Broadband, Expert Village, Mondo Media, lonelygirl15, Extreme Elements, and Ford Models to supply the video content. The video units are user-initiated and will play only after a user has clicked to play the video.

The ads within the video unit are targeted based on a combination of the video content and the publisher’s site content. Advertisers are charged on a cost-per-click or cost-per-impression basis. Ads appear as a companion banner ad at the top of the video unit and as a text ad on the bottom portion of the video once the video begins playing. AdSense publishers and YouTube content partners will receive a share of the ad revenue.

Content distribution on AdSense improves the overall web experience by connecting consumers with more relevant information and entertainment on the sites they visit. This new program is a scalable and cost-effective way to distribute content online, creates a new revenue opportunity for publishers and content owners, and helps advertisers reach their target audiences in new and innovative ways. It will also allow AdSense publishers a unique way to enhance their sites with fresh, dynamic content.

Video units are now available in the U.S. for English language websites. Over the coming months, we will expand the program to include other types of content to bring these benefits to content owners no matter their medium of choice.

Google and IBM Announce University Initiative to Address Internet-Scale Computing Challenges

Posted on 08:00 by Unknown

Mountain View, Calif., and Armonk, N.Y. – October 8, 2007 – Google and IBM today announced an initiative to promote new software development methods which will help students and researchers address the challenges of internet-scale applications in the future.

The goal of this initiative is to improve computer science students’ knowledge of highly parallel computing practices to better address the emerging paradigm of large-scale distributed computing. IBM and Google are teaming up to provide hardware, software and services to augment university curricula and expand research horizons. With their combined resources, the companies hope to lower the financial and logistical barriers for the academic community to explore this emerging model of computing.

The University of Washington was the first to join the initiative. A small number of universities will also pilot the program, including Carnegie Mellon University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Maryland. In the future, the program will be expanded to include additional researchers, educators and scientists.

"Google is excited to partner with IBM to provide resources which will better equip students and researchers to address today’s developing computational challenges," said Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google. "In order to most effectively serve the long-term interests of our users, it is imperative that students are adequately equipped to harness the potential of modern computing systems and for researchers to be able to innovate ways to address emerging problems."

Fundamental changes in computer architecture and increases in network capacity are encouraging software developers to take new approaches to computer-science problem solving. For web software such as search, social networking and mobile commerce to run quickly, computational tasks often need to be broken into hundreds or thousands of smaller pieces to run across many servers simultaneously. Parallel programming techniques are also used for complex scientific analysis such as gene sequencing and climate modeling.

"This project combines IBM’s historic strengths in scientific, business and secure-transaction computing with Google’s complementary expertise in Web computing and massively scaled clusters," said Samuel J. Palmisano, chairman, president and chief executive officer, IBM. "We’re aiming to train tomorrow’s programmers to write software that can support a tidal wave of global Web growth and trillions of secure transactions every day."

For this project, the two companies have dedicated a large cluster of several hundred computers (a combination of Google machines and IBM BladeCenter and System x servers) that is planned to grow to more than 1,600 processors. Students will access the cluster via the Internet to test their parallel programming course projects. The servers will run open source software including the Linux operating system, XEN systems virtualization and Apache’s Hadoop project, an open source implementation of Google’s published computing infrastructure, specifically MapReduce and the Google File System (GFS).

At the University of Washington, students were able to harness the power of distributed computing to produce complicated programs such as software that scans voluminous Wikipedia edits to identify spam and organizes global news articles by geographic location.

"In 2006, when I helped Christophe Bisciglia, a former UW student now a senior engineer at Google, to develop the program, our goal was to understand the challenges that universities face in teaching important new concepts such as large scale computing and develop methods to address this issue," said Ed Lazowska, Bill & Melinda Gates Chair of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington. "A year later, we’ve seen how our students have mastered many of the techniques that are critical for large scale-internet computing, benefiting our department and students."

"Carnegie Mellon applauds Google and IBM for helping to provide the resources that will help professors better prepare our students for the challenges presented by highly parallel computing," said Randal Bryant, Dean of the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. "We are quite pleased to be among the first universities participating in this program this fall."

To simplify the development of massively parallel programs Google and IBM have created the following resources:

  • A cluster of processors running an open source implementation of Google’s published computing infrastructure (MapReduce and GFS from Apache’s Hadoop project)
  • A Creative Commons licensed university curriculum developed by Google and the University of Washington focusing on massively parallel computing techniques available at: code.google.com/edu/content/parallel.html
  • Open source software designed by IBM to help students develop programs for clusters running Hadoop. The software works with Eclipse, an open source development platform. The plugin is currently available at: lucene.apache.org/hadoop/
  • Management, monitoring and dynamic resource provisioning of the cluster by IBM using IBM Tivoli systems management software
  • A website to encourage collaboration among universities in the program. This will be built on Web 2.0 technologies from IBM’s Innovation Factory.

About IBM and Education

IBM has a long-standing commitment to furthering education, including its IBM Academic Initiative, an innovative program offering a wide range of technology education benefits from free to fee that can scale to meet the goals of most colleges and universities. IBM will work with schools – that support open standards and seek to use open source and IBM technologies for teaching purposes – both directly and virtually via the Web.
