{Google Desktop} ε Linux

Posted on 08:00 by Unknown

Announcement
June 27, 2007

(Google Desktop now on Linux)

Google Desktop hit the operating system trifecta today with the release of a version of Google Desktop™ for Linux. Now available on Linux, Mac OS X and Windows, the Google Desktop application allows users of every major operating system to search their desktop and the web as quickly, easily and comprehensively as they search the web with Google.

Major features of Google Desktop for Linux (beta) include:

  • Comprehensive Indexing – Users can search the full text of virtually all their computer’s content, including text, PDF, PS, source code, HTML files, email from Thunderbird, OpenOffice.org documents, Man and Info pages, folders, images, and music. Google Desktop for Linux can even find previous versions of files or recover those that have been accidentally deleted.
  • Quick Search Box – The Quick Search Box is the fastest way to do web and desktop searches. Hitting the command key twice calls it up, instantly displaying results as users type.
  • Gmail and Web History Search – Not everything users are looking for resides on their computer. Google Desktop for Linux makes it easy for users to simultaneously search their Gmail™ webmail, web search history and the web at large. And because their index is stored locally on their own computer, users can even access their Gmail and web history while they’re offline.

With this release, Google Desktop joins the Picasa™, Google Earth™ and Google Toolbar for Firefox™ applications among Google’s offerings for Linux. In addition to creating products that run on Linux, Google supports the Linux community in a variety of ways, such as releasing open source code, running the Summer of Code™ and hosting tens of thousands of open source projects on Google Code™ (code.google.com).

Google Desktop for Linux (beta) was developed by Google’s Beijing engineering team, and is available in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Dutch, Chinese (simplified and traditional), Japanese, Korean, and Portuguese. It runs on Debian 4.0, Fedora Core 6, Ubuntu 6.10, SUSE 10.1, and Red Flag 5, and can be downloaded for free at desktop.google.com.

Google Docs & Spreadsheets matures with a fresh new face

Posted on 08:00 by Unknown

Announcement
June 27, 2007

When you log in to Google Docs & Spreadsheets today, you might be in for a bit of a surprise: we’ve completed a pretty significant redesign. Since we launched Google Docs & Spreadsheets less than a year ago, we’ve made dozens of updates to enable better collaboration. As more and more documents accumulated, users asked for an even easier way to manage them. With this latest refresh, you’ll see that we have been listening to feedback and spending time thinking about the best ways to stay organized.

Some highlights of the clean new look:

  • Sidebar with folders: For those who used tags, all your tags have been converted into folders, and you can now drag and drop your documents into any folder. Just like tags, docs can live in multiple folders.
  • Documents sorted by collaborator: Sometimes you can’t think of the title or even the content of a document, but you remember whom you shared it with or who shared it with you. To make sorting easier, we’ve added new "created by me" and "shared with…" folders.
  • Better search: With autocomplete, all relevant documents, folders, and collaborators are displayed as soon as you begin typing your search query.

The redesign also includes new icons, chronological sorting, and an easier way to save documents in alternate formats.

These features and other improvements are now available to anybody using Google Docs & Spreadsheets at docs.google.com or through Google Apps

Introducing Google Earth Outreach

Posted on 08:00 by Unknown

New initiative helps nonprofit organizations around the world leverage the power of Google Earth to advocate, educate; new Global Awareness layers from Global Heritage Fund, Earthwatch Institute, TransFair USA

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (June 26, 2007) – Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) today announced the launch of Google Earth Outreach, a new program designed to help nonprofit organizations around the world leverage the power of Google Earth to illustrate and advocate for the important work that they do.

Google Earth Outreach
Enlarge image

The announcement was made at Google’s New York City office by Elliot Schrage, Google Vice President for Global Communications & Public Affairs, and John Hanke, Director of Google Earth & Maps. Pilot Outreach partners including Jane Goodall, Founder, the Jane Goodall Institute; Kathy Bushkin Calvin, Executive Vice President, United Nations Foundation; and Edward Wilson, President and CEO, Earthwatch, were also on hand to discuss how their organizations are using Google Earth to tell effective and compelling stories about their work.

Google Earth Outreach enables any organization to quickly and easily get the resources it needs to create compelling stories through Google Earth layers. The program includes comprehensive online guides, video tutorials, and case studies about using Google Earth specifically targeted to the needs of nonprofit organizations. In addition, there are online forums connecting new participants to Global Awareness partners and experienced programmers who can assist in developing Keyhole Markup Language (KML) layers for Google Earth. These forums, actively moderated by Google Earth Outreach staff, serve to foster discussion and cooperation among organizations and the broader Google Earth community.

Organizations can also now apply online for Google Earth Pro grants (a $400 value); grantees will receive additional technical support from Google. Participating organizations may be highlighted in the Google Earth Outreach Showcase, an online gallery of the most compelling new layers, and a subset of those will be featured in the Global Awareness folder in Google Earth on a rotating basis. More details about Google Earth Outreach are available at earth.google.com/outreach/.

"Google’s mission is all about making information more accessible and useful," said Elliot Schrage, Google Vice President of Global Communications & Public Affairs. "With programs like Google Earth Outreach, we seek to help create a ‘marketplace of ideas’ in the growing not-for-profit sector that rivals and complements what we offer commercial enterprises. In a very practical way, Google Earth Outreach demonstrates that technology can inspire action by bringin seemingly distant problems closer to home."

"Our goal with Google Earth Outreach is to help public service organizations worldwide leverage our mapping technology to further their goals by providing tailored technical guidance and grants," said John Hanke, Director of Google Earth & Maps. "Now any organization can quickly and easily annotate Google Earth with pictures, video and information to tell visual, compelling stories of the work they do to over 200 million Google Earth users."

"Only if we understand can we care. Only if we care will we help. With Google Earth Outreach, more people have the chance to see, to care, and then to act," said Jane Goodall, PhD, DBE Founder, the Jane Goodall Institute, UN Messenger of Peace.

"Google Earth represents a whole new way for us to connect with the world," explains Ed Wilson, President and CEO at Earthwatch. "Not only can we inform people about key environmental issues facing the world today, but we can give them the opportunity to get directly involved. From our NGO and corporate partners to our dedicated researchers and volunteers, Google Earth provides us all with a centralized tool to communicate our mission--and maximize our impact."

As part of the announcement John Hanke also introduced three new Global Awareness layers for Google Earth:

  • Global Heritage Fund (GHF) – The GHF Global Awareness layer explores cultural heritage sites around the world that GHF is working to preserve for future generations. From ancient Mayan Mirador pyramids buried in Guatemalan forests threatened by clear cutting to the crumbling Lijiang Ancient Town in China, GHF takes users to these endangered archaeological treasures of human civilization and details the efforts to save them in partnership with local governments and resources.
  • Earthwatch Expeditions – The Earthwatch Global Awareness layer enables users to virtually visit more than 100 volunteer Earthwatch expeditions in Google Earth— from recording the activities of lemurs in Madagascar to determining the impact of climate change on grey whale populations in Mexico and Canada. Enthusiasts and would-be volunteers can explore scientific field research projects in progress around the world and learn how they can help collect field data in the areas of rainforest ecology, wildlife conservation, marine science, archaeology, and more.
  • Fair Trade Certified – The TransFair USA layer introduces users to the over 70 Fair Trade Co-ops located throughout Latin America, Asia and Africa. Fair trade is an innovative market-based approach to sustainable development that helps family farmers in developing countries gain direct access to markets and develop the business capacity necessary to compete in the global marketplace.

Google Apps Gets Mail Migration, Dozens of New Features

Posted on 08:00 by Unknown

Announcement
June 25, 2007

This week we’re adding mail migration to Google Apps, Google’s web-based platform for communication and collaboration. This is one of more than 30 features and updates to the service we’ve rolled out since February 2007 and is just another example of the power of hosted services to deliver updates and innovations to users quickly, without making them wait years for the next big scheduled upgrade.

We’re excited about the new mail migration feature because it will make it easier for organizations to get started on Google Apps Premier and Education Editions and give their old email new life – in many cases, that email is sitting in storage, covered with metaphorical dust and difficult to search. Administrators use a self-service wizard to easily and securely transfer existing email data from an IMAP server over to users’ Gmail accounts on Google Apps. Gmail will put messages into conversation threads, display the original sender, recipient, and date of messages, and convert existing mail folders into labels. Old messages are instantly searchable with Gmail’s fast Google-powered search. This tool currently supports email servers with an IMAP interface.

We’ve also been busy with some other updates that are either already available on Google Apps or will be available very soon:

  • Shared address book – Users who want to add colleagues to a new email or document no longer have to go to a separate list or company directory. Users can search through all the users on a domain by clicking the "Choose from contacts" link.
  • Google Docs & Spreadsheets charts – Number-crunchers will be happy to see that we’ve included the ability to create charts in a spreadsheet.
  • Increased Gmail attachment size – We made it easier to share more of those large presentations and files as attachments by doubling the allowable attachment size to 20 MB to make Gmail space even more useful.
  • Multi-user chats – Now users can invite multiple contacts into the same chat on the Google Talk gadget from their Start Page. This will be useful for small groups working on a document or other project together.
  • Google Docs & Spreadsheets refresh – Soon we’ll complete a visual overhaul of Docs & Spreadsheets that will make it much easier for users with dozens or even hundreds of documents to search, locate, and organize their documents.

Google Apps launched as a free service in August 2006 and includes Google Docs & Spreadsheets, Gmail email services, Google Calendar shared calendaring, Google Talk instant messaging and voice-over-IP, and the Start Page feature for creating a customizable home page on a specific domain. Please visit www.google.com/a for details on the product, local availability, partners and customers.

A New Way to Pay – Google Expands Pay-Per-Action for Google AdWords™

Posted on 08:00 by Unknown

Announcement
June 21, 2007

Google announced today the worldwide expansion of its pay-per-action advertising beta. Pay-per-action is a new pricing model that allows advertisers to pay only when a pre-defined action is completed on their site, such as when a user makes a purchase, signs up for a newsletter, or completes any other clearly defined action. Since the initial launch of the pay-per-action advertising beta in March 2007, many advertisers who have used the new pricing model are pleased with the opportunity to have more ways to promote their products and services online.

"Pay-per-action advertising helped our company make the most of our marketing budget," said Alexandre Douzet, Executive Vice President and General Manager, TheLadders.com, the leading $100k+ job search web site and an early adopter of Google’s pay-per-action advertising model. "At TheLadders.com, we are big proponents of marketing efficiency, so the ability to supplement our existing cost-per-click campaigns with a model that rewards qualified leads makes a lot of sense to us."

Starting today, advertisers in the beta will see an alert in their AdWords account informing them that they can now create pay-per-action campaigns. Going forward, advertisers who have enabled AdWords conversion tracking and received more than 500 conversions from their CPC and CPM-based campaigns in the past 30 days will be automatically added to the beta on a rolling basis.

Pay-per-action ads are only shown on publisher sites in the Google content network, also known as Google AdSense™ for content sites. Publishers in the Google content network who want greater control over the ads shown on their sites may select between individual ads, a shopping cart of ads, or a specific keyword that is relevant to their site’s content. These publisher-selected ad units contain only pay-per-action ads, and therefore, they do not compete in the auction against CPC or CPM-based ads, which are served in separate AdSense for content ad units.

With this new pricing model, both advertisers and publishers gain more precision and control over their efforts to effectively spend advertising budgets and deliver relevant ads to related website content. Pay-per-action advertising is now available to qualifying advertisers worldwide.

Google Announces Investments in Clean Energy and Green Technology

Posted on 08:00 by Unknown

Paris, France (Tuesday, 19 June 2007):Google Inc. today set out its strategy to help build a cleaner energy future. This plan will enable the company to go carbon neutral by 2008 and help support environmental innovation that could ultimately benefit everyone.

Key components of the strategy include:

  • Maximising the efficiency of Google’s data centres, which account for most of the energy it consumes. These use less than half the energy of standard industry data centres – cutting the company’s power consumption by a factor of more than two;
  • Increasing Google’s use of renewable energy. The company has finished Phase 1 of a 1.6 megawatt (MW) solar panel at its headquarters in Mountain View. Google is committed to creating an additional 50 MWs of renewable energy generating capacity by 2012 – enough to power 50,000 homes. The company will also apply a shadow price for carbon when buying power for its data centres to encourage the use of cleaner energy;
  • Offsetting emissions that cannot be eliminated directly. Google recognises that offsets are an imperfect solution but believes they help finance environmental improvements that would not otherwise happen. In addition Google would rather invest in projects which reduce global carbon emissions now, rather than waiting until the company can eliminate its own entirely in the future;
  • Leveraging its assets to make an impact beyond the business. Google:
    Invests in innovative projects like plug-in hybrid cars (plug-ins) in order to make cleaner technologies commercially viable more quickly;
    Co-founded Climate Savers Computing, an industry initiative to increase computer efficiency and cut carbon emissions by 54 million tons a year by 2010;
    Enables users to inform and engage the world on energy and climate change matters by using products like Google Earth and Google Transit;
    Supports changes to public policy – including the setting of energy efficiency and renewable portfolio standards, price signals for greenhouse gas emissions, and increased public spending on energy efficiency and renewable R&D.;

For the full details please go to www.google.com/corporate/green/energy/.

Eric Schmidt, Chairman and Chief Executive of Google said:

"Innovation goes to the heart of what Google does. By investing in new technologies and by working in partnership with others we can make a meaningful contribution to the environment. This is just a start. We are actively looking for more opportunities to help tackle climate change."

Urs Hoelzle, Senior Vice President, Operations and Google Fellow said:

"Overall the Internet is a relatively clean technology: sending an email or downloading an album has less impact than posting a letter or buying a CD. And by maximising our energy efficiency, creating an additional 50 MWs of renewable energy generating capacity and investing in innovative green technology Google will help build a cleaner energy future."

Dr. Steve Howard, Chief Executive of The Climate Group, said:

"The ominous threats posed by global warming demand bold, imaginative and far-reaching action by every sector of the economy. Google’s commitment to invest in environmental innovation, combined with their ‘worldwide’ reach, will significantly help promote and accelerate international action on climate change."

Carter Roberts, President of the World Wildlife Fund in the US said:

"Google, not surprisingly, innovates to address an issue that affects almost every person, place and animal on the planet. In the last quarter, the company put in place the single largest solar installation of any US corporation, committed to buying 50 MW of renewable energy and worked with WWF, Intel and other industry leaders to develop and launch the Climate Savers Computing Initiative to move carbon reductions broadly through its sector."

Google Launches RechargeIT Plug-In Hybrid Car Initiative and Unveils Solar Installation

Posted on 08:00 by Unknown

Google.org to fund more than $10 million to accelerate plug-in hybrid and vehicle-to-grid technology

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (June 18, 2007) – Google.org, the philanthropic arm of Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG), today announced the RechargeIT initiative (www.rechargeit.org) that aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and oil dependence by accelerating the adoption of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles ("plug-ins"). As part of this initiative, Google.org awarded $1 million in grants and announced plans for a $10 million request for proposals (RFP) to fund development, adoption and commercialization of plug-ins, fully electric cars and related vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology.

In addition, Google Inc. announced that it has switched on the solar panel installation at its Mountain View, Calif. headquarters, which will help the company reduce its environmental footprint and power its plug-ins with clean solar electricity. At 1.6 megawatts – and with an electricity output capable of powering approximately 1,000 average California homes – the Google project is the largest solar installation to date on any corporate campus in the United States and one of the largest on any corporate site in the world.

At today’s event, Google teamed with PG&E to demonstrate the bi-directional flow of electricity between plug-ins and the electric grid. "Clean energy technology can dramatically shift how we make and use energy for our cars and homes by charging cars through an electric grid powered by solar or other renewable energy sources, and selling power back to the electric grid when it’s needed most. This approach can quadruple the fuel efficiency of cars on the road today and improve grid stability," said Dr. Larry Brilliant, Executive Director of Google.org.

The RechargeIT Initiative includes several elements designed to advance plug-in development and commercialization, including:

  • Grants: Google.org announced grants to the following organizations:
  • Brookings Institution (www.brookings.edu): $200,000 to support a spring 2008 conference on federal policy to promote plug-ins;
  • CalCars (www.calcars.org): $200,000 to support its work to educate the public about plug-ins;
  • Electrical Power Research Institute (EPRI) (www.epri.org): $200,000 to support its plug-in research and development program;
  • Plug-In America (www.pluginamerica.org): $100,000 to raise public awareness and advocate for plug-in transportation;
  • Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) (www.RMI.org): $200,000 to enable RMI to launch the design of a practical plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, with additional support and collaboration by Alcoa, Johnson Controls, and the Turner Foundation;
  • Dr. Willett Kempton, University of Delaware (www.ocean.udel.edu/cms/wkempton): $150,000 for megawatt scale vehicle-to-grid research and implementation planning.
  • $10M RFP: Later this summer Google.org will publish a formal request for proposals (RFP) on our website, focused on investment opportunities in companies and projects accelerating the commercialization of alternative transportation that reduces vehicle fossil fuel use and climate emissions. We are looking to invest approximately $10 million in technologies and companies featuring plug in hybrids, fully electric vehicles, vehicle-to-grid capabilities, batteries and other storage technologies, and the application of renewable energy and fuels to green vehicles. We believe that our investments in green vehicle technology commercialization, coupled with additional R&D; and policy grants, will help accelerate progress in addressing the climate and energy challenges of today’s transportation sector.
  • Plug-In Data Project: To demonstrate the potential of this new technology, Google has partnered with A123Systems/Hymotion to convert a small fleet of hybrid cars into plug-ins and published preliminary performance data at www.rechargeit.org. The experimental fleet of plug-in Prius models has averaged 74mpg to date, compared with 41mpg for the test fleet of non-plug-in Prius hybrids.
  • Google Fleet: Through a partnership with Enterprise Rent-A-Car, the Google Fleet is a program designed to support alternative commuting through a free car-sharing program that will be offered to Google employees. The program will eventually expand to include 100 plug-ins as they become available.
  • "Google is committed to using its resources to help solve the global climate challenge," said Dr. Brilliant. "Google.org is a hybrid philanthropy, bringing together the active engagement of the broader Google corporation, as well as investments in for-profits, traditional grants, policy work, and public information. RechargeIT brings together all of these elements to help accelerate progress on plug-ins. By demonstrating new clean energy technologies and how they can be connected to the grid, we hope to spur demand and encourage car manufacturers to make these vehicles commercially available on a large scale on an urgent basis."

    Today’s news closely follows Google’s sponsorship of the Climate Savers Computing Initiative (www.climatesaverscomputing.org), which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by setting aggressive new targets for energy-efficient computers. Climate Savers and today’s RechargeIT illustrate Google’s commitment to reduce its environmental impact as a company and to protect the environment.

    Google AdWords Announces New Content Placement Reports for Advertisers

    Posted on 08:00 by Unknown

    Announcement
    June 12, 2007

    In an ongoing effort to provide more transparency to advertisers, Google announced today the availability of a new AdWords report, called a Placement Performance report, which enables advertisers to see the exact sites on the Google content network where their ads appear. Placement Performance reports also provide site-by-site performance metrics – including domain, URL, impression, click, conversion and cost data – as well as aggregated metrics for traffic generated from AdSense for domain sites. With these reports, advertisers have much more insight into their contextually targeted advertising spend and are able to leverage the information to more effectively optimize their campaigns and meet their objectives. Designed in response to advertisers’ requests, Placement Performance reports offer advertisers both increased transparency and greater control over their contextual advertising, which ultimately lead to more relevant ads for users.

    With a network of large and small publishers, the Google content network provides unmatched reach and customizable targeting for advertisers online. Now, advertisers who are opted in to the content network can clearly identify high and low-value sites for their particular business, and react accordingly based on their performance to meet their marketing objectives on the content network. With Placement Performance reports, Google makes site-by-site data easily available and actionable to help advertisers get the best possible ROI on the Google content network. Sites that perform particularly well can be targeted more aggressively by implementing complementary features such as site targeting. Conversely, specific sites that convert poorly can be excluded or optimized by refining keywords and ads in campaigns.

    The reports can also be coupled with conversion tracking tools, such as the Google AdWords conversion tracking feature or Google Analytics, to give advertisers a better understanding of their holistic online advertising performance. Placement Performance reports are now available to all U.S. advertisers, and are launching globally in all countries in the coming weeks.

    Intel and Google Join with Dell, EDS, EPA, HP, IBM, Lenovo, Microsoft, PG&E, World Wildlife Fund and Others to Launch Climate Savers Computing Initiative

    Posted on 08:00 by Unknown

    Broad effort organized to drive energy-efficient computing; goal to save $5.5 billion in energy costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 54 million tons per year*

    MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., June 12, 2007 – Intel Corporation and Google Inc. joined with Dell, EDS, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), HP, IBM, Lenovo, Microsoft, PG&E, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and more than 25 additional organizations today announced the Climate Savers Computing Initiative (www.climatesaverscomputing.org). The goal of the new broad-based environmental effort is to save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by setting aggressive new targets for energy-efficient computers and components, and promoting the adoption of energy-efficient computers and power management tools worldwide. "Today, the average desktop PC wastes nearly half of its power, and the average server wastes one-third of its power," said Urs Hölzle, senior vice president, Operations & Google Fellow. "The Climate Savers Computing Initiative is setting a new 90 percent efficiency target for power supplies, which if achieved, will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 54 million tons per year – and save more than $5.5 billion in energy costs. "We are asking businesses and individuals throughout the world to join with us to institute better power management of their computing equipment and purchase energy-efficient computers," Hölzle added. Initial companies who intend to participate in the initiative represent both the demand and supply side of the computer industry, including computer manufacturers and chip makers, as well as environmental groups, energy companies, retailers, government agencies and more. The group will formalize its membership in coming weeks. "By 2010, the Climate Savers Computing Initiative will cut greenhouse gas emissions in an amount equal to removing more than 11 million cars from the road or shutting down 20 500-megawatt coal-fired power plants – a significant step in reducing the emissions affecting our planet," said Pat Gelsinger, senior vice president and general manager of Intel’s Digital Enterprise Group.

    "Computers have helped us make huge strides toward a more efficient world today, with reduced travel, more productivity, online transactions and more," Gelsinger added. "But with today’s latest energy-efficient technologies, we can do even more. The commitment of the member companies that are here with us today is a firm statement to the collective resolve to make an enormous impact."

    Computer and computer component manufacturers who support the initiative are committed to building energy-efficient products that meet or surpass the EPA’s Energy Star® guidelines. Businesses must also commit to requiring high efficiency systems for the majority of their corporate desktop PCs and volume server purchases, and to deploy and use power management tools on desktop PCs.

    Individual consumers can also support the Climate Savers Computing Initiative by signing up at www.climatesaverscomputing.org, where they will be able to pledge to purchase an initiative-certified system. The Web site will also help consumers learn how to take advantage of their existing computer’s power-saving capabilities such as sleep and hibernate modes, which can reduce the amount of energy consumed by up to 60 percent.

    The Climate Savers Computing Initiative licensed its name from the WWF Climate Savers program, which involves several leading companies working to reduce their carbon footprint.

    "This is the first time our Climate Savers program has been applied to an entire sector, engaging manufacturers, retailers and consumers," said John Donoghue, senior vice president for the World Wildlife Fund. "We are pleased to join these industry leaders to provide solutions to address climate change."

    The initiative’s energy efficiency benchmarks will initially follow the EPA’s Energy Star guidelines; but with increasing requirements during the next several years. For example, 2007 Energy Star specifications require that PC power supplies meet at least 80 percent minimum efficiency. The initiative would require a minimum of 90 percent by 2010. In addition, the initiative sets a higher efficiency target in the power supply for volume servers (1U and 2U single-socket and dual-socket systems): an increase from 85 percent to 92 percent efficiency by 2010. For a complete description of the requirements, see www.climatesaverscomputing.org.

    Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) Joins Google’s Library Project

    Posted on 08:00 by Unknown

    Announcement
    June 6, 2007

    The number of libraries participating in the Google Book Search Library Project just got a whole lot bigger with today’s addition of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC). The CIC is a national consortium of 12 research universities, including University of Chicago, University of Illinois, Indiana University, University of Iowa, University of Michigan, Michigan State University, University of Minnesota, Northwestern University, Ohio State University, Pennsylvania State University, Purdue University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Google will work with the CIC to digitize select collections across all its libraries, up to 10 million volumes.

    Readers will have access to many distinctive and unique collections held by the consortium. Users will be able to explore collections that are global in scope, like Northwestern’s Africana collection or dive deep into the universities’ unique Midwest heritage, including the University of Minnesota’s Scandinavian and forestry collections, Michigan State’s extensive holding in agriculture, Indiana University’s folklore collection, and the history and culture of Chicago collection at the University of Illinois-Chicago.

    Google will provide the CIC with a digital copy of the public domain materials digitized for this project. With these files, the consortium will create a first-of-its-kind shared digital repository of these works held across the CIC libraries. Both readers and libraries will benefit from this group effort:

    • The shared repository of public domain books will give faculty and students convenient access to a large and diverse online library before housed in separate locations.
    • This new collaboration will enable librarians to collectively archive materials over time, and allow researchers to access a vast array of material with searches customized for scholarly activity.

    For books in the public domain, readers will be able to view, browse, and read the full texts online. For books protected by copyright, users will get basic background (such as the book’s title and the author’s name), at most a few lines of text related to their search, and information about where they can buy or borrow a book.

    "This library digitization agreement is one of the largest cooperative actions of its kind in higher education," said CIC chairman Lawrence Dumas, provost of Northwestern University. "We have a collective ambition to share resources and work together to preserve the world’s printed treasures."

    Two CIC member universities are already working with Google Book Search, the University of Michigan and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and this new agreement will complement the digitization work already taking place.

    The CIC becomes the latest partner in the Google Books Library Project, which in addition to the University of Michigan and University of Wisconsin-Madison, also includes Harvard University, Stanford University, Oxford University, the New York Public Library, Stanford University, University of California, University of Texas at Austin, University of Virginia, Princeton Library, the Complutense University of Madrid, the Bavarian State Library, the Library of Catalonia, the University Library of Lausanne and Ghent University Library. Google is also conducting a pilot project with the Library of Congress.

    The Google Books Library Project digitizes books from major libraries around the world and makes their collections searchable on Google Book Search. More information can be found at: books.google.com.

    Google Calendar Gallery Offers Next Best Thing to a Personal Concierge

    Posted on 08:00 by Unknown

    Announcement
    June 6, 2007

    From the start, we wanted our Google Calendar web-based calendar service to take all the work out of "managing your calendar," and a key piece of that was making it easy to search among public calendars for interesting events – whether it’s a local children’s story hour or the San Antonio Spurs schedule – and add them to your personal calendar with one click. Now we’re pumping up the volume of public calendars by adding the new Google Calendar gallery, with free listings from sources like Atlantic Records, Cordless Recordings, Disney, Eventful, JamBase, Orbitz, the NBA, Netflix, The New York Times, TLC, Wcities, and Zvents.

    You can browse detailed sports, music, and TV schedules and add either individual events or complete schedules to your Google Calendar in one click. Think of Google Calendar gallery as an incredibly plugged-in friend who helps you remember all the hottest events, or that personal concierge you always dreamed of hiring. Here are some highlights:

    • TV listings for your zip code, with extra details on TLC shows
    • Presidential candidates’ 2008 schedules from The New York Times
    • Sports schedules provided by Eventful and the NBA
    • Theme park events and schedules from Disney
    • Updates on travel deals and the ability to search on Orbitz within your calendar
    • Concert dates from Atlantic Records, Cordless Recordings, Eventful and JamBase
    • Festival schedules from Wcities and Zvents
    • Movie and DVD release dates from Netflix
    • "Music Horoscopes" and celeb birthdays from artists on Atlantic Records

    Anyone can view Google Calendar gallery listings for free – you don’t have to have a Google Calendar. You can browse different categories of calendars to see which ones are the most popular, or you can search in the search box for the topics that most interest you. You’ll see video, images, and detailed descriptions right in the listings so you can preview the events or shows with one click. If you also use Google Calendar, you can add events to your personal calendar with one click and receive email or mobile phone alerts so you never miss your favorite basketball team or band again. It’s also easy to share these events with friends and family.

    You can try it out for free by visiting: www.google.com/calendar/gallery.

    Salesforce.com and Google Form Strategic Global Alliance

    Posted on 08:00 by Unknown

    Two industry leading platforms come together to allow companies to acquire customers, run more efficiently and thrive

    SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (June 5, 2007) – Salesforce.com (NYSE: CRM), the market and technology leader in on-demand business services, and Google (Nasdaq: GOOG)today announced that they have formed a strategic global alliance to help millions of businesses leverage the Internet to achieve success. The newest product resulting from this alliance, Salesforce Group Edition featuring Google AdWords, is a robust offering that combines the power of Salesforce on-demand CRM applications with the Google AdWords™ platform to achieve integrated sales and marketing success. This joint solution provides businesses of all sizes with the same tools used by larger enterprises to successfully attract and retain customers.

    "The Web has quickly become the most powerful tool small and medium sized businesses can use to compete and win in today’s economy," said Eric Schmidt, chief executive officer at Google. "Combining the power and simplicity of Salesforce with Google AdWords helps businesses find and keep customers to ultimately drive their continued success."

    "The alliance of Google and salesforce.com brings together the world’s leading platforms to empower small and medium size businesses to accelerate and thrive," said Marc Benioff, chairman and CEO of salesforce.com. "The Internet has completely changed the landscape for small and medium businesses and the alliance between Google and salesforce.com enables companies of all sizes to acquire new customers and streamline their business to experience unfettered success."

    "Now there is a single online destination for businesses of all sizes to attract and acquire new customers, while closely tracking the return on their valuable marketing dollars," said Sheryl Sandberg, Vice President, global online sales and operations at Google. "This alliance is about introducing new audiences to the benefits of online advertising, marketing and sales through the integration of two world-class solutions to help small and medium businesses succeed in today’s global marketplace."

    Salesforce.com and Google Strategic Alliance

    Both salesforce.com and Google have revolutionized how customers and businesses utilize the Internet. Salesforce has altered the business software landscape by delivering an award-winning CRM application as a subscription-based service over the Web, completely eliminating the need for software, hardware or IT support. At the same time, Google has transformed the advertising industry with Google AdWords, enabling marketers to spend less money and still reach a larger percentage of their key audience by associating ads with specific keyword searches.

    Now, salesforce.com and Google have formed a strategic global alliance to mutually use their product, packaging, and promotional resources to enable companies of all sizes to realize unprecedented levels of success. As part of the alliance, salesforce.com will be the first on-demand company to resell the Google AdWords platform, acting as an official distribution channel for the Google AdWords product. The alliance is across 43 countries and encompasses distribution, technology and co-marketing efforts.

    Salesforce Group Edition featuring Google AdWords – The Engine for Business Growth

    Salesforce Group Edition featuring Google AdWords provides an integrated and effective solution that gives companies of all sizes all the tools they need to acquire new customers and grow their business. By encapsulating every element of the customer lifecycle – advertising, creating leads, closing business and retaining customers – in one solution, Salesforce Group Edition featuring Google AdWords enables any company to jump start their business by creating an online marketing and sales presence.

    Salesforce Group Edition featuring Google AdWords enables users to:

    • Advertise Online – With Salesforce Group Edition featuring Google AdWords, companies can immediately connect to Google AdWords, and create an ad that is displayed with the relevant search results on Google.com or across the Google AdSense™ content network of partner websites. Users can create an ad in as quickly as five minutes and with as little as $5.
    • Attract Prospects – When people search the Web for the products and services that your company sells, your ad appears with the relevant search results. When they click on your ad, visitors are taken to your website.
    • Capture Leads – Once you have potential customers on your website, you can entice visitors to fill out a name capture form on your site with an offer for a Webinar or white paper. The information collected on the form flows directly into Salesforce as a new lead.
    • Acquire Customers – As soon as a lead is added into Salesforce, it is distributed to the sales team. Salesforce Group Edition featuring Google AdWords enables businesses to effectively manage and share leads, track opportunities through the sales cycle and close deals faster. Sales teams can manage all customer interactions in Salesforce and turn qualified leads into new customers.
    • Analyze Growth – Salesforce Group Edition featuring Google AdWords features dashboards that gives companies a bird’s eye view into lead generation, sales metrics, and company growth. Dashboards and reports are quick and easy to access with real-time information and allow companies to make decisions quickly and alter advertising strategies appropriately.
    • Mash-up Other Business Applications – Through the power of Salesforce.com’s AppExchange directory, customers have the opportunity to mash-up any of 600 business applications including technologies for mapping and productivity.

    In addition to these features, Salesforce Group Edition featuring Google AdWords also includes a custom designed user experience starting with an exclusive login page. Joint customers can go to the Google site at www.google.com/adwords/salesforce to login to their AdWords account and can access Salesforce directly at www.salesforce.com/google.

    "By working with Google to create a brand new streamlined user experience, one-stop shop feature set, and a breakthrough price point, we’ve taken the great idea behind Salesforce for Google AdWords and now made it the perfect fit for any-sized company looking to jump start their business," said George Hu, Chief Marketing Officer, salesforce.com. "We believe this opens up largely untapped market opportunities around the globe for both companies."

    "Our site traffic is up 55 percent since we started using the integrated salesforce.com and Google AdWords solution, and now I know where that traffic came from and what piqued their interest," said Erin Jacobs of TFC. "The joint solution allows companies like TFC to utilize the full power of the Internet by combining the best from Google and salesforce.com."

    Salesforce.com and Google – Committed to Corporate Philanthropy

    Another common thread that brought salesforce.com and Google together in their global alliance is their commitment to corporate philanthropy. In July of 2000, salesforce.com launched the Salesforce.com Foundation, which operates under the company’s innovative 1/1/1 Model – a commitment to deliver 1% Time, 1% Equity and 1% Product to nonprofit organizations and, most recently, to be "one" with the earth.

    Since its launch, the Salesforce.com Foundation has donated their product to more than 2,000 nonprofits. Similarly, Google has also given free online advertising to selected nonprofits through its Google Grants program, supporting more than 2,500 nonprofit organizations in 16 countries to date. The Salesforce.com Foundation and Google are now teaming up to donate the new Salesforce Group Edition featuring Google AdWords to each other’s nonprofit grantees. These selected nonprofits will be able to gain access to the same integrated sales and marketing success that is available to the private sector at no cost. Salesforce Group Edition featuring Google AdWords will also be made available to additional nonprofits within the next quarter.

    "Salesforce.com and Google provide simple business solutions that are useful for any organization," said Alex Holderness, chief operating officer for VolunteerMatch.org, a nonprofit dedicated to making it easy for nonprofits and volunteers to connect. "These tools have proven effective in our efforts to help volunteers match themselves to nonprofits, and we anticipate even greater success with Salesforce Group Edition."

    Pricing and Availability

    Salesforce Group Edition featuring Google AdWords is available today in a five user edition for a special, 30 day promotional price of $600 per year, including a $50 AdWords credit. The $50 AdWords promotional credit is available to new AdWords advertisers in the US, Canada, and Mexico only. The list price of the solution is $1,200 per year. AppExchange applications may require an additional fee. For more information, visit https://www.salesforce.com/google or call 1-800-NO-SOFTWARE.
